"I can't rate if it was one of the best but the teammates were appreciating, they were saying it was one of the best", he said at the end of day's play here with India at 250/9 thanks largely to his effort.

Pujara's 16th test century saved India after a disastrous start that saw them slump to 86 for five after lunch, falling to a combination of awful shot-making and quality Australian pace after captain Virat Kohli won the toss.

It took a brilliant direct from Pat Cummins to remove him on what happened to be the final ball of an absorbing day one of the four-Test series.

Cheteshwar Pujara scored a defiant century to lead India's recovery after Australia's fast bowlers threatened to dominate the opening day of the first Test.

Cummins provided the breakthrough of Ashwin just before the new ball.

"We got the wickets the way we thought we might get the wickets", he told the Seven Network.

Batting after Kohli won the toss, the visitors crumbled in a disastrous morning session under a pace barrage before digging in later in the day with Pujara and Ravi Ashwin (25 off 76 balls) staging a fightback as the bowlers exhausted.

Veteran Murali Vijay, in the side after young gun Prithvi Shaw suffered ankle ligament damage in a warm-up game, didn´t last much longer, caught behind by skipper Tim Paine of Starc for 11.

He compiled a patient 21, putting aside disrupted preparations after the shock arrest of his brother this week for allegedly framing a love-rival with a fake terror plot.

Earlier, seamer Josh Hazlewood grabbed two wickets in the morning session, removing Ajinkya Rahane (13) and the out-of-form Lokesh Rahul (two). Sharma, who was selected at No. 6 ahead of allrounder Hanuma Vihari, fell for 37 off 61 balls. Just when he was making it look so easy, Rohit committed hara-kiri and holed out to Harris at deep square-leg after having been reprieved by the same fielder on the boundary off Lyon's previous delivery.

Pujara then enjoyed 41-run and 62-run partnerships with Pant and Ashwin respectively before the 30-year-old, playing his 65th Test, was run out by Cummins, who along with Hazlewood and Starc each picked up two wickets.
