Instagram rolled out an update Thursday morning - accidentally, apparently - that had Chicago users demanding via Twitter that the Facebook-owned company change it back.

But now the Head of Instagram says it was a big mix-up and users will see their feed revert to scrolling as soon as they restart the app.

The reaction on social media was nearly universally negative. Instead of scrolling up and down to view content, it forced users to tap left or right, utilizing a horizontal, Stories-like approach.

"This reminds me of that terrible Snapchat update that they had to change back to normal because it sucked so bad", one person commented Thursday morning. Many users are still upset about losing the chronological feed for photos, which was replaced by an algorithm-controlled feed in 2016.

Journalist and media commentator Owen Jones posted a meme of a person with a flamethrower, alongside the caption: "Here's how I'm dealing with the new Instagram feed". In June 2018, The Verge reported that Instagram had 1 billion users worldwide, an increase in 200 million from its census of 800 million the previous year.

In response, relived users tweeted at Mosseri that the results of the so-called test were clear.

Instagram, which has been experimenting with a sideways-scrolling format, meant to roll it out to small test group, but the bug caused it to spread more widely, wrote Instagram chief Adam Mosseri on Twitter.

This change prompted many Instagram users to complain on Twitter, who didn't like the social media platform's new look.

But as quickly and quietly as the update came, it disappeared and the feed reverted to its old style by 8 a.m. PT. Instagram confirmed to TechCrunch that it was a mistake.

Instagram Accidentally Changed How You Scroll And People On Twitter Were Upset
