It looks as though hip-hop is leading the way for this year's Grammy awards, with Kendrick Lamar topping the list for most nominated artist.

The nominations for the 2019 Grammys were officially released Friday morning, and with the news comes both snubs and surprises. Lamar was nominated for the Black Panther album compilation he executive produced for the blockbuster film. Instead, country singer Kacey Musgraves beat him to the punch with a nomination for album of the year. Lamar's "All the Stars" is up for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

The nominees for Record of the Year are "I Like It" (Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin), "The Joke" (Brandi Carlile), "This Is America" (Childish Gambino), "God's Plan" (Drake), "Shallow" (Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper), "All The Stars" (Kendrick Lamar and SZA), "Rockstar" (Post Malone featuring 21 Savage), and "The Middle" (Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey), while the nominees for Album of the Year are "Invasion Of Privacy" (Cardi B), "By The Way, I Forgive You" (Brandi Carlile), "Scorpion" (Drake), "H.E.R". She has garnered 10 awards and is the only woman to win album of the year twice.

Drake's frequent collaborator, producer Boi-1Da, earned six nods, as did Carlile, who also scored nominations in the American Roots category.

The nominees for the 2019 Grammys mark a departure from this year's show, where women were underrepresented in the top four categories.

Rap as a genre has dominated the nominations, with five of the top six most-nominated artists being rappers.

One year on from outgoing Recording Academy president Neil Portnow telling women to "step up" women are far better represented women in this year's nominations. The singer has released seven well-received, musically eclectic albums but has never won a Grammy.

"Linda represents what we hope becomes the norm, which is the elimination of gender bias in producing and engineering in our industry", Portnow said. Justin Timberlake, whose "Man of the Woods" albums flopped earlier this year, picked up a nod for "Say Something", his collaboration with Chris Stapleton.

The Carters ("Apesh*t"), Childish Gambino ("This Is America"), and Joyner Lucas ("I'm Not Racist") were nominated for Best Music Video. R&B legend Toni Braxton walked away with three nods, including Best R&B Performance, Best R&B, Song and Best R&B Album for Sex and Cigarettes.

Jim (Kimo) West, who was born in Toronto and is known as Weird Al Yankovic's guitarist, is nominated for Moku Maluhia - Peaceful Island in the new age album category. Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Fred Armisen, Jim Gaffigan and Patton Oswalt are up for best comedy album. His song God's Plan is also vying for best rap performance against Travis Scott's Sicko Mode, a track where Drake appears as a guest. Chris Cornell, who died previous year, is up for best rock performance with "When Bad Does Good". Monáe, herself snagged an Album Of The Year nomination for her most recent project, Dirty Computer.

Then in June, it announced an expansion from five to eight of the 2019 nominee fields for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist.

The 2019 Grammys will hand out awards in its 84 categories live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 10, 2019.
