Preparing for no Brexit as well as no deal - that is one way to help the PM be "robust" with her own backbenchers.

The Lib Dems also said they would give their support, alongside Labour and the Tory rebels who declared their backing on Thursday, meaning that it has a chance of success if the other minor parties and a dozen or so more Conservatives follow suit.

But European Council President Donald Tusk, who is also at the G-20 meeting in Buenos Aires, warned that the agreement ratified by the EU last weekend is "the only possible one". She declined to entertain questions about what alternative she might offer if the current agreement is rejected December 11.

"It's about delivering the vote to leave the European Union and doing it in a way that protects people's jobs and livelihoods and protects our security and our United Kingdom".

Mrs May has said that if lawmakers reject the agreement it could see the world's fifth-largest economy leaving the bloc without a deal, or not leaving at all.

"If they can not look their constituents in the eye and say it is, they must vote this deal down and then hand the decision back to the people".

Asked in a BBC interview if she would seek a second vote, she declined to answer directly, repeating her comment that she was only focusing on the Dec 11 vote.

Parliament will begin five days of debate on Dec 4, with the final vote due to be held on Dec 11.

"A People's Vote is a practical way to get out of the constitutional crisis we are in". I've got a deal which delivers for the British people. "That is actually a betrayal of the British people".

There's every sign they won't, and that would leave May with a set of unpalatable options that range from taking Britain out of the bloc without a deal - with potentially disastrous economic consequences - to holding a second referendum.

But hinting at potential further resignations from Mrs May's top team over Brexit, he added: "Members of the Cabinet who don't vote for the deal won't be members of the Cabinet".

Asked which of those two options was more likely if her deal does not pass, she said: "We haven't had the vote yet".

"If this deal is rejected in the Commons we are left with, as was already stressed a few weeks ago by Prime Minister May, an alternative: no deal or no Brexit at all". "I want to reassure you that the European Union is prepared for every scenario".

Dr Fox, who insisted that Mrs May was "changing the public mood", appeared to suggest that some of his Cabinet colleagues may still vote against the PM's Brexit deal.

May has faced questions as to why she is spending time selling her deal to the public rather than the lawmakers who will vote on it. "We don't see any alternative coming forward from the Labor Party".

"For the first time in more than four decades, the United Kingdom will have an independent trade policy", May will tell leaders, according to remarks emailed by her office.

In the meantime, May will push the case for reform of the World Trade Organisation at the G20 summit of industrialised nations on Friday and Saturday, including increasing transparency, updating dispute settlement processes and promoting trade in services and digital alongside goods.
