Microsoft abandons the Edge

Naming aside, it's also not clear whether the Anaheim browser will keep any of Edge's user interface or opt for a complete redesign.

According to Microsoft pundit Brad Sams, there are a considerable number of clues about the streamlined new operating system hidden inside the latest Windows 10 insider build, which is now being beta tested. But if all this is true, then Microsoft's EdgeHTML engine and Edge as we know it will be no more.

There are two very interesting rumours about Microsoft circulating the intertubes today, both involving Alphabet's Chrome products. The fact that Chromium is an open-source project might somewhat assuage that fear.

This news will probably make most people laugh at Microsoft for once again failing to make a winning browser.

Microsoft is purportedly planning a major change to its Edge browser.

According to a report from Windows Central, Microsoft is working on a Chromium-based browser, codenamed "Anaheim", which will replace Edge as the default browser on Windows 10. It doesn't have to mean much, but it is indicative that we may see this new browser running on a Windows 10 machine, on an ARM processor.

We'd expect to see Microsoft start to increase visibility of Anaheim through the 19H1 development cycle which is already with Fast ring Insiders.

"Part of our strategy with EdgeHTML is to build an engine that, instead of replicating (and, in some senses, competing with) the underlying platform, integrates and works with it to deliver the best possible security, accessibility, battery life, interactivity, just pure raw performance on that platform".

A picture of Chrome for the 1% of you who's never used it. With a new browser that's built on Chromium, websites should behave exactly the same as they do on Chrome. The activity was reported by 9to5Google, which noted that Microsoft, Google and Qualcomm were all seemingly working on the code to get Chromium working on "Windows 10 on ARM", a version of Windows created to run on mobile devices like the HP Envy X2.
