A total of 7 influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported to the CDC for the 2018-2019 flu season.

According to the MDHHS, a child in Osceola County died after catching the flu.

Flu is a contagious, viral respiratory illness. Although Michigan has only experienced localized flu activity over the past few weeks, MDHHS strongly recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get a seasonal flu vaccine.

"Today we have a global surveillance system, antiviral drugs to treat flu illness, antibiotics to treat secondary infections and the ability to develop vaccines", the CDC said. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk of serious flu complications, says the CDC. The next flu reporting season will start October 2019, and so on.

Michigan's first child flu death this season has been confirmed, and state health officials are urging everyone 6 months of age and older to get vaccinated.

Seven flu cases reported last week in Erie County.

Fifty-six percent of those who did not receive a shot cited what the survey called "a common misperception" about the vaccine to explain why they hadn't done so.

Last year's flu season, keep in mind, was particularly severe.

There's nearly no reason why someone shouldn't get a flu shot, she added, and it's not just about keeping you healthy, but preventing the spread of influenza to other New Yorkers.

In the US, antiviral medications and various flu vaccines are available in most pharmacies.

Vaccination is especially important for people who are at high risk of developing serious complications from influenza.
