Existing tsunami detection systems in Indonesia can detect earthquakes but not landslides beneath sea level, such as the one that occurred on Anak Krakatau.

When she saw the waves approaching the shore she managed to get into her vehicle but was unable to outrun the water.

"We keep monitoring the tremor activities of Mt Anak Krakatoa, particularly under [current] extreme weather and high waves because such conditions can potentially cause the collapse of the volcano's flank, going down to the sea, and trigger a tsunami", Dwikorita Karnawati, chief of the Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, told a press conference just before midnight on Tuesday.

She recalled the auto being hit by three waves which broke the back window and her vehicle began to flood. "I nearly drowned, but thankfully I was saved when I was near the coast", he said, explaining that one of his friends had managed to pull him out of the rushing waters.

The country's tsunami warning system has been inoperable because of vandalism and technical problems since 2012, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of public relations for the Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

A woman carries a child at an evacuation center at Labuhan after a tsunami hit Banten province, Indonesia, Tuesday. Instead, only about 100 people showed up for the service, which usually brings in double that number.

"The walls of the volcano's caldera have been getting fragile, especially if heavy rains pour onto it", she said. Many congregation members had already left the area for the capital, Jakarta, or other locations away from the impact zone. "So our celebration is full of grief". Nearly 1,500 people were reported injured, with 21,991 displaced from their home.

The death toll from a tsunami that hit the Sunda Strait coastline of Indonesia over the weekend has risen to 429, according to authorities who issued new warnings on the grim anniversary of an natural disaster and tsunami in 2004 that killed a staggering 230,000 people across 14 countries.

Over 2,000 soldiers and police, along with personnel from the search and rescue office and the disaster management agency office as well as volunteers, were participating in an emergency relief operation, which still put a priority on the search and rescue of the victims, Sutopo added.

Sniffer dogs are being used to find those still missing as grief-stricken relatives lined up at identification centres, but hopes of finding any survivors beneath the rubble have dwindled.

Many of his friends went to hospital with cuts from glass shards after the windows of their hotel broke.

The lead singer of the Indonesian pop band Seventeen located the body of his dead wife after posting emotional posts on social media, vowing that he would not leave her.

One of the most horrifying images to emerge from the sudden disaster was a rock band swept off the stage in mid-performance when the deadly wave came ashore.

"Since Anak Krakatau has been actively erupting for the past several months, additional tsunamis can not be excluded", said Dr. Prof Hermann Fritz of the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States.

The disaster also caused deaths in a dozen other nations around the Indian Ocean, killing around 230,000 people in total.

This year, the country has suffered its worst annual death toll from disasters in more than a decade.

In September, thousands were believed killed by a quake and tsunami that hit Indonesia's Sulawesi island.

Despite the devastating 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands of people, Indonesia lacks proper equipment to warn of an incoming tsunami.
