Perth pitch was by no means ‘average’, says Sachin Tendulkar

Echoing similar views as Johnson, former England Test player Michael Vaughan also expressed his shock over the decision and described the pitch as "tremendously exciting".

Australia beat India by 146 runs at Perth, their first Test win since the ball tampering incident. Tendulkar said that the Perth pitch truly tested the skills of batsmen and bowlers. This pitch was by no means "Average". Vaughan wrote, "And they wonder why Test Match cricket is struggling . Was a tremendously exciting pitch which had a bit for everyone . Should be more like this IMO".

"I'd actually be interested in knowing what a good pitch is?"

The rating, which was given by match referee Ranjan Madugalle, is the lowest possible pass mark provided by the ICC while evaluating the pitch and outfield of a Test ground, Cricket.com.au reported.

The Adelaide pitch, where the two teams played their opening Test, was rated as "very good" by the ICC.

Australian spearhead Mitchell Starc, who took five wickets in Perth in the second Test, said the decision was "harsh". "I thought it was a fantastic battle between bat and ball, which is what you want in Test cricket", he said. You want a contest between bat and ball so that's going to keep Test cricket alive and get people into the game like in Perth. If you look at the match here a year ago where the wicket did nothing, it was a pretty boring Test match.

The Perth pitch, which became a minefield after day two, was a stunning green top and offered variable bounce throughout the match.

"Anyone who says there's anything wrong with that wicket, they must've been watching a different game", Australia coach Justin Langer said earlier this week.

"Even a public poll could get some good feedback or some bad feedback".

The match was an attritional one - every session saw countless shifts in momentum as both sides engaged in a serious power struggle on a green-tinged wicket that provided deadly bounce and, sometimes, no bounce at all. Many batsmen had suffered some nasty blows as well, due to its uneven bounce.
