Four killed after rescue helicopter strikes zip line in UAE's Ras Al-Khaimah

"An Agusta 139 helicopter in a rescue mission crashed in Jabal Jis area in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah", UAE's news agency WAM quoted the country's civil aviation authority as saying.

According to an eyewitness, "the chopper went into a spin all of a sudden and then crashed into the mountain".

The incident occurred before the helicopter reached the injured man it had set out to rescue.

Horrified eyewitnesses told how it spun into a death spiral after the rotors got tangled in the steel wire, Gulf News reports.

The UAE's Supreme Council for National Security and the National Search and Rescue Centre both confirmed on social media that four people were aboard the helicopter at the time of the accident.

The zip line on top of Jebel Jais mountain, the UAE's highest peak, which the helicopter is thought to have crashed into is 2,800 metres - equivalent to 28 football fields.

Soon after the crash, HH Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.

No details were given on the cause of the crash or the number of dead.
