Bre Payton, a writer for the conservative news site The Federalist and a frequent guest on the Fox News Channel and other media outlets, has died suddenly at the age of 26.

Payton was found unconscious Thursday morning by a friend, Morgan Murtaugh, and was taken to a nearby hospital in San Diego.

After hours of tests doctors determined she was suffering from the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, as well as possible meningitis, according to a CaringBridge fundraising page set up for her.

'24 hours ago I found my friend unconscious and called 911, ' Murtaugh wrote.

Around 11:30 a.m., about four hours after her first tweet, Murtaugh tweeted that Payton had died. By Friday afternoon, Murtaugh had updated her tweet.

"Bre brightened the lives of everyone around her", the statement said. "Please send prayers to her family".

"Bre has passed", publisher Ben Domenech tweeted.

Added Murtaugh in another tweet, "Rest in paradise you attractive soul". "We are devastated. Last we saw her, she was her amusing, smart, vivacious self".

"Ben and I are absolutely gutted and horrified by this news", Meghan McCain, The View co-host and daughter of the late Sen.

As noted by Fox's Shannon Bream, Payton's family has launched a scholarship in her honor to support "young, rising Christian leaders". "She was joyful, hard-working, and compassionate, and she leaves behind friends and colleagues for whom she brought nothing but sweetness and light", The Federalist wrote.

She later appeared as a guest commentator on the Fox News Channel and One America News Network.

"@Bre_payton was such a handsome light, smart and amusing and kind and talented". The family is asking for prayers and privacy at this time, the Federalist said. "She was far too young".

Payton graduated from Patrick Henry College in 2015 with a degree in journalism, according to The Federalist.

Ms Payton is survived by her parents George and Cindy, siblings James, Jack, Christina and Cheekie, and boyfriend Ryan Colby.
