Rocket docks at space station A Russian-made Soyuz rocket with a three-man crew arrived at the International Space Station yesterday in the first manned mission since a failed launch in October.

"We have confirmation of the spacecraft separation; Soyuz capsule and crew safely in orbit", NASA TV said online in its blow-by-blow commentary of the take-off.

Russia's space agency Roscosmos has successfully launched a manned Soyuz rocket carrying astronauts to the International Space Station for the first time since October's aborted mission.

Since NASA retired the space shuttle in 2011, Russian Soyuz rockets have been the only way to get people to the International Space Station.

Kononenko, McClain and Saint-Jacques smiled and gave thumbs up to the cheering crowd including relatives as they ascended into the Soyuz capsule on Monday morning.

Cosmonaut Kononenko said on Sunday, Dec. 2, during a press conference, that he "absolutely" trusts the flight plan.

"We are psychologically and technically prepared for blast-off and any situation which, God forbid, may occur on board".

They'll spend about six hours in orbit before docking at the ISS around 12:30 p.m, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said.

Three astronauts have successfully blasted off to the International Space Station from Kazakhstan, a ideal launch that follows October's aborted mission.

"Well, we have to loop around the earth", McClain said, adding "I'll be over Seattle in about the time it'll take you get back from the buses".

Saint-Jacques, 48, described the Soyuz spacecraft as "incredibly safe".

The previous launch - involving NASA's Nick Hague and Russia's Aleksey Ovchinin - had to be aborted after the first stage of the rocket failed to separate as planned. The ISS went a crew of three. CBC News Network will also broadcast the interactive special featuring Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.

McClain served in Iraq and has represented the United States in women's rugby.

She has said that training to spacewalk resembled the sport since it demands "grit, toughness, mental focus, and more".

"The #Exp58 crew is safely in orbit!"

Russia-US cooperation in space has remained one of the few areas not affected by a crisis in ties between the former Cold War enemies.

Next year, however, Russian Federation will see intense global competition.
