The British Indians all have family in India and were visiting Iceland as tourists.

Icelandic police said one child was among the dead and two were among the injured.

The holidaymakers from the United Kingdom included two couples in their thirties and three children, aged around three, eight and nine.

The crash took place on took place on a 200-300 metre one-lane bridge on the national Route 1 road near Skeidararsandur, a vast sand plain in southern Iceland.

It then fell around eight metres onto a river bank.

While officers doubted the road had been icy, they said humidity could have made the surface slippery. Four others, including two British Indian brothers and two young children, remain in critical condition after being airlifted to a hospital in Iceland's capital Reykjavik.

The Indian Ambassador to Iceland, T Armstrong Changsan, is believed to have visited them.

Guide Adolf Ingi Erlingsson arrived at the scene of the accident that claimed the lives of four people this morning at Núpsvötn.

He told Sky News: "It was quite a horrific scene".

"The auto seemed to have hit the ground many meters from where it stopped". When I got there four people were out of the vehicle, one of them deceased.

"The driver was alive but trapped more or less under the dashboard, I couldn't see his face".

Police say it remains unclear what caused the British driver to lose control of the vehicle but temperatures were around freezing at the time.

The Foreign Office is "supporting the family of several British nationals" and is in "close contact with the Icelandic authorities", a spokesperson said.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Erlingsson said the SUV was a "total wreck" when he arrived at the crash site.

"I tried to talk a bit to the driver and calm him down".

"For some reason the driver lost control of the vehicle, hit the railing and plunged down".

The group was travelling eastbound over the bridge in Nupsvotn, just south of the Vatnajokull glacier.

Temperatures were around freezing at the time of the accident, which occurred hours before the North Atlantic island saw sunrise at almost 11.30 am local time. "It is now considered to be of the most treacherous single-lane bridges in Iceland and has had 14 accidents since the turn of the century, though none as serious as this".
