Trump & Putin ignore each other at G20

Fissures on trade, climate change and Ukraine divided world leaders Friday as US President Donald Trump came under sustained fire and Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler came in from the cold at G20 talks.

Trump argues that the massive balance of trade in China's favour is not sustainable for the American economy.

The US has been pushing China hard on intellectual property theft, and World Trade Organisation rules that still give China developing nation status. If we can make a deal that'd be good.

"I think the most likely scenario is that [Chinese President] Xi Jinping doesn't offer big enough concessions to Trump, and so nothing much comes of the G20 meeting", said Julian Evans-Pritchard from Capital Economics.

'In the past they've sought to take a fairly orthodox approach. what we've seen more recently you wouldn't describe as orthodox, but that doesn't mean the objective isn't the same, ' Mr Morrison said. China calls the United States protectionist and has resisted what it views as attempts to intimidate it. "Way, way, way above my pay grade", he said.

Trump's skepticism that global warming is caused by human activity has raised questions about whether the countries will be able to find enough common ground on climate change to include it in any communique. "I think we'd like to", said President Trump before heading into a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

On the economic front, the G20 nations are expected to have exchanged views on other risks to the world economy, including the slowdown of China's economy, and US monetary policy normalization that could trigger an outflow of capital from emerging markets.

Hopes of progress over tariffs in Mr Trump's expected talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping have been dampened.

While Trump canceled his meeting with Putin, the US president was still scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but analysts were not optimistic about prospects for a major breakthrough on the two countries' trade disputes a month before USA tariffs on Chinese goods are set to ramp up.

For example, a draft says 19 of the participants agree on the importance of upholding the Paris climate accord, but the United States doesn't.

The G20 had a rocky start following the meeting between Macri and Trump on Friday morning.

Also looming large amid dozens of bilateral meetings in Buenos Aires was the gruesome slaying of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia's Istanbul consulate and the participation at the summit of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is alleged to have ordered the killing.

Already the French Presidency has said that Emmanuel Macron spoke to the Crown Prince on the summit's sidelines about both the journalist's murder and Saudi's role in the war in Yemen, which the United Nations has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

A Chinese foreign ministry official in Buenos Aires said there were signs of increasing consensus ahead of the discussions, although differences remained.

Saudi officials have blamed the killing on rogue agents and denied the crown prince had knowledge of the operation.

And with G20 summits a magnet for protesters, security forces are on high alert.

Speaking in the White House before he left for the summit, Mr Trump tempered expectations.

Oil markets were awaiting a bilateral meeting between Putin and Prince Mohammed on Saturday afternoon for any sign that Russian Federation will participate in a production cut by the OPEC oil cartel next month. "Just to see how leaders interact with the crown prince will be interesting - how warm they are".

Before heading for Buenos Aires on Thursday, Trump said he was open to a trade deal with China, but added, "I don't know that I want to do it".

The meeting between the two - known in diplomatic terms as a "pull aside" - followed a meeting between Trump and prime ministers of Japan and India on the sidelines of the summit.

The three countries agreed a deal in principle to govern their trillion dollars of mutual trade after a year and a half of contentious talks concluded just an hour before a deadline on September 30.

Trudeau still had a few barbs on Friday. As of now, there is no certainty on the deal, the daily said citing unnamed governmental sources.
