Trump Says He'll Nominate William Barr To Return As Attorney General

Who Is William Barr?

President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is nominating former Attorney General Bill Barr fill the role left by Jeff Sessions last month.

On another Clinton-related investigative topic, Barr told The New York Times in November of past year he believed that there was more justification for the Department of Justice to investigate Clinton's role in approving a 2010 sale of us uranium stockpiles to a Russian energy company in what is commonly known as the "Uranium One" deal, than for investigating any potential collusion between President Trump and Russians.

While he has an extremely conservative record, Barr would also bring to the role seasoned experience and is well regarded in the legal community.

The Washington Post first reported that Barr is the leading candidate. Those familiar with the discussions said Barr, having already been attorney general, doesn't feel a particular ambition for the position, but does feel a sense of duty to take it if offered. Sources cautioned to CNN, however, that Trump makes the final decision.

Rove noted Barr respects Mueller, who led the FBI's criminal division when the former was AG under Bush.

Barr said that not pursuing an investigation of "Uranium One" would be evidence that "the department is abdicating its responsibility".

"He'd be an outstanding choice", Graham said last week.

At least one other contender who has received serious consideration from the White House, according to the person, is Rep. John Ratcliffe, a Texas Republican.

Senate Democrats have sued the administration over the appointment, arguing it wasn't constitutional.

Barr has already made public comments about the Russian Federation probe and the firing of James Comey, which probably figured into Trump's comfort level but will be fodder for Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

He also defended Trump's firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey in an op-ed, and has said special counsel Robert Mueller's team lacks balance.

Trump has come under criticism by members of Congress for naming Whitaker, Sessions's chief of staff, as the acting attorney general instead of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

"What I have said, without mentioning Mr. Barr - I've said, the best thing the administration can do is to get somebody who had majority support from Republicans and Democrats alike for attorney general".

"I have worked with him for over 25 years and I believe it would be a great choice", Cullen told ABC News.
