US Team to Visit China for Trade Talks in Early January

Will US and China come to a compromise

Will US and China come to a compromise

It is the latest advancement to the on-going trade tensions between the two biggest economies in the world.

A USA trade team will head to Beijing in the second week of 2019 to hold talks with Chinese officials.

Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Jeffrey Gerrish will lead the Trump administration's team, which will also include Treasury Under Secretary for International Affairs David Malpass, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The notice attributed the change to new US-Chinese engagement "with the goal of obtaining the elimination of the acts, policies, and practices covered in the investigation" following a December 1 meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Buenos Aires.

The U.S. also delayed a planned January 1 tariff increase until March 2.

Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesman Gao Feng confirmed that the two sides planned to sit down for talks next month, although he didn't provide a date for the meeting during his regular briefing in Beijing on Thursday.

According to a notice by China's customs authority, USA rice that meets inspection and quarantine requirements can enter the country.

That call came after the two sides discussed "economic and trade issues" by phone earlier in that week, the ministry said. Beijing so far has pledged to resume buying American soybeans and to at least temporarily lower retaliatory tariffs on us autos. China has also said it will suspend additional tariffs on US-made vehicles and auto parts for three months starting Jan 1, adding that it hopes both sides can speed up negotiations to remove all additional tariffs on each other's goods. The unified list is seen as an effort to address concerns from Western investors that there is no level playing field in China.

In addition to the list, Chinese lawmakers also drafted a foreign investment law which is now for public consultation. It will likely go through several readings before being submitted to China's parliament for formal approval, which could take another year or more.

U.S. prosecutors accuse Meng Wanzhou of misleading multinational banks about Iran-linked transactions, putting the banks at risk of violating USA sanctions.

Officials have been in constant contact with the U.S.to try to determine what else is needed to move things forward in January, according to people familiar with the talks.
