Who Is William Barr?

Late President George H.W. Bush (right) listens to Deputry Attorney General William Barr at a White House ceremony announcing Barr's nomination to succeed Attorney General Dick Thornburgh. "With an investigation as sensitive as the one involving Clinton, the ultimate decision-making is reserved to the attorney general or, when the attorney general is recused, the deputy attorney general".

After leaving the Justice Department, Barr served in a variety of high-level corporate positions, including as general counsel and executive vice president of Verizon Communications.

The Washington Post reported earlier Barr was the front-runner for the post. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), a former Judiciary chairman who remains on the committee suggested Wednesday that Barr would get bipartisan support in the Senate.

At the Justice Department, Barr's work ranged from combatting violent crime to investigation the Pan Am 103 bombing.

He also defended Trump's firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey in an op-ed, and has said special counsel Robert Mueller's team lacks balance.

He said there was more basis to investigate a uranium deal approved while Clinton was secretary of state in the Obama administration than potential collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

The presidents' aides had previously floated the idea of Barr retaking his post in the Justice Department, sources said, with an announcement expected next week.

"In my view, prosecutors who make political contributions are identifying fairly strongly with a political party", Barr said.

And if they argue that Barr will be Trump's stooge, they better have more evidence than the two statements discussed above.

"The attorney general's oath to uphold the Constitution raises the question whether his duty lies ultimately with the president who appointed him or more abstractly with the rule of law", I said in my confirmation hearings, and have said several times since, that the attorney general's ultimate allegiance must be to the rule of law". Barr was one tough lawyer.

He has said that Robert Mueller hired too many prosecutors with Democratic campaign ties for his investigative team - telling the Washington Post he "would have liked to see [Mueller] have more balance".

Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the No 2 Republican leader, agreed.
