The winter storm sweeping across the southern United States revealed its power Saturday by dropping 10 inches of snow on Lubbock, Texas - 2 inches more than the city usually gets in a whole year. Weather Prediction Center forecaster David Roth told NPR this could be a "historic storm" for southwest Virginia and western North Carolina. Meanwhile, kids and the young at heart took advantage of the early winter snow with snowball fights, sledding and snowmen. Bridges and overpasses are still likely to become slick tonight into Sunday morning as we transition to snow. Cooper said some crashes had caused major delays on interstate highways.

"Snow and ice will make roads treacherous", Cooper said at a news conference Saturday. Stay safe where you are. "Wrap a few presents, decorate the tree, watch some football".

Governors and local officials in several states declared emergencies ahead of the storm crossing several Southern states and poised to hit particularly hard in portions of North Carolina and Virginia.

Emergency officials urged everyone to stay indoors and off icy roads.

"Virginians should take all necessary precautions to ensure they are prepared for winter weather storm impacts", Northam said in a statement.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for southwestern Virginia in Dickenson and Buchanan counties and nearby McDowell County in West Virginia.

While some sleet could mix in later Sunday and keep snow totals lower, the weather service expected the heaviest snow to fall across northwest North Carolina into Southern Virginia. Possible freezing rain and dusting snow could also reach the I-85 corridor, including Atlanta by Monday afternoon.

Parts of North Carolina could see record snowfall, described by the National Weather Service as a "once-in-a-generation event".

North Carolina's largest electric utility, Duke Energy, has said there there could be more than 500,000 power outages. Blue Grass Airport reported at least five flights to Charlotte, N.C. had been canceled.

More than half the Sunday flights at Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Piedmont Triad International Airport have also been called off. Cancellations were reported on flights from as far as the Midwest.

About 2/3rds of the snow falls in January and February.

Authorities have responded to hundreds of traffic accidents as a winter storm dumps snow and ice on parts of the Southeast.
