An American who may have been exposed to Ebola while in the Democratic Republic of Congo arrived in Nebraska to be monitored the medical facility revealed Saturday

There is no approved vaccine or treatment for the devastating disease, which can incubate in a person for three weeks before prompting initial symptoms, which can include a fever, sore throat, muscular pain and headaches, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Nebraska Medical Center is home to one of the nation's few dedicated biocontainment units, its news release said.

Dr. Ted Cieslak, infectious diseases specialist with the hospital and associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health, said the person is not officially a patient.

According to Nebraska Medicine, the individual now is not showing symptoms; however, should any symptoms develop, the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit would be activated and the person admitted. The person was treating patients outside the urban epicenter of the outbreak and had contact with a patient who was later diagnosed with Ebola, according to US officials.

Second Largest Ebola Outbreak On Record The DRC is facing the second largest outbreak on record that has so far killed more than 350.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo were more than 590 cases of infection with a deadly virus of Ebola, another 360 people died as a result of the disease.

According to the hospital, the doctor was flown by private plane and then taken by auto.

Ebola - also known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever - is a rare and deadly virus that can be spread through human contact with bodily fluids and causes severe bleeding and organ failure.

The doctor has not yet shown any symptoms, the Nebraska Medical said in a statement. Working with federal, state and county public health officials, they will be monitored in a secure area not accessible by the public or any patients.

During the Ebola outbreak in 2014, the NBU treated 3 patients, said UNMC on its website. In 2015, several others were monitored after exposure, but none of them developed the disease.
