‘Could be a while’: Trump refuses to budge in shutdown standoff

These Dems will make life harder for Trump

President Donald Trump invoked his predecessor's fence during a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday while advocating for a "physical barrier" at the U.S. -Mexico border.

At first, Trump said he'd be happy to take the blame for a government shutdown over border wall funding. The vice-president, Mike Pence, was expected to join as the shutdown drags into its second week, shuttering parks and leaving hundreds of thousands of federal employees without pay.

The shutdown began after Trump rejected bipartisan congressional efforts to fund many operations through February 8, insisting that any deal must contain money for the construction of a border wall.

At the end of the interview, she turned back to Trump: "If he doesn't build the wall, the next president will be a Democrat".

"Let's make a deal?"

Democratic aides downplayed expectations for the 3 p.m. encounter at the White House, saying that since it was being billed by the White House as a "briefing" and not a meeting they were prepared for a one-sided and non-factual presentation. Led by presumptive House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, they have scheduled votes on their first day in power on legislation that would end the shutdown without providing the wall funding Trump wants. "Whether you hate the president or love the president, border security goes hand in hand with national security, the safety of our communities and public safety".

For Trump, taking a strong stand and refusing to compromise on funding for his signature border wall is a way to fulfill a key campaign promise to his supporters. Since the partial shutdown began on December 22, though, Trump has sought to brand it the "Schumer Shutdown".

Adding to the uncertainty in Washington, an incoming senator, former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, lashed out at Trump on Tuesday in an opinion piece in The Washington Post. But its prospects of passage are grim in the Senate, where Republicans hold a majority.

Nancy Pelosi will "cut your head off and you won't even know you're bleeding", says the top Democrat's daughter. They planned to pass them as soon as the new Congress convenes Thursday.

But while the messaging war on both sides continued through the holidays and Trump stayed in Washington instead of traveling to Florida, actual negotiations have remained at an impasse. Kamala Harris (D) and Dianne Feinstein (D) took the time to tweet and speak out against the border wall and in favor of illegal immigrants. "But if you think about it, when you think about how this country is changing fundamentally, when you look at who's representing us ... it's going to be a handsome America, and I think we should all be proud of that", said the filmmaker.

Pelosi easily squashed opposition to her bid for Speaker of the House by cutting a deal with those opposed to her leadership.

"I think the people of this country think I am right", Trump said, and it "could be a long time" before the government reopens.

It would also include another measure to fund the departments of Agriculture, Interior, Housing and Urban Development and others closed by the partial shutdown. That was 30 years ago ...
