Ghosn's jail detention extended until January 11 as prosecutors build case

The extension of the detention was linked to this last accusation, which would have kept him in prison until January 1, before the court approved on Monday the 10-day extension, Efe news reported. But some experts are puzzled that the allegations against Kelly and Ghosn are about underreporting income from Nissan.

A Nissan spokesman said the vehicle maker.

Ghosn, who led Nissan Motor Co. for two decades and helped save the Japanese automaker from near bankruptcy, was arrested November 19 on suspicion of falsifying financial reports.

Ghosn, who denies any wrongdoing, will reportedly be allowed access to his lawyers on 2-3 January - both Japanese holidays.

Greg Kelly, a former representative Director of Nissan and close collaborator of the former President, was also arrested in connection with Ghosn's compensation scandal. He also said he was innocent and hoped to regain his reputation.

Nissan has also been charged by prosecutors as a corporation involved in the case, according to Japan broadcaster NHK.

If eventually released on bail, Ghosn's movements would likely be restricted to his home or a hotel, and he would need court permission to leave the country, legal experts have said.

Prosecutors have pressed formal charges over the first allegation but are yet to do so for the others.

Ghosn, accused of aggravated breach of trust, is facing allegations of making the auto maker shoulder 1.85 billion yen ($16.8 million) in personal investment losses.

Worries are growing about the future of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, which includes another smaller Japanese automaker, Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

Ghosn's aide Greg Kelly, who was arrested at the same time over his alleged role in helping the executive understate his pay, was released on a bail at 70 million yen ($634,000) on December 25. Nissan officials have been cooperating closely with the prosecutors in the investigation.

Renault SA of France, which owns 43 percent of Nissan, has chosen to retain Ghosn while naming an interim chair.

Nissan has rejected the calls for a shareholder meeting at this stage, and says it is waiting until a commission looking into governance at the firm releases its findings.
