Kidnappers in Norway demand $10M Monero ransom for millionaire's wife

Sources have now indicated that a written message was found in the Hagen house, which demanded a $10 million ransom be paid entirely with the privacy-focused cryptocurrency Monero.

The kidnappers have threatened to use violence against her if her family does not meet their demands, Norway's Aftenposten newspaper reported today. The family chose to follow the police advice'.

Mrs Hagen is married to Tom Hagen, a businessman with an estimated fortune of 1.7bn Norwegian krone (€174m; £156m) made in the real estate and energy industries.

Norwegian police had asked the media to stay silent on the kidnap, but on Wednesday decided to make it public in the hope that neighbours, or people hiking in the area, may have seen or recorded something that could help lead to the attackers.

Many Norwegian media outlets knew of Mrs Falkevik Hagen's disappearance but did not publish any details after the police warned against publicising the kidnap over fears the attackers would harm the victim.

Norwegian police confirmed that "a woman in her late 60s is believed to have been kidnapped from her home in Lorenskog", around 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Oslo, but did not disclose her identity.

The newspaper reported that the note said Ms Falkevik Hagen would be killed if police were involved.

"A ransom demand and serious threats have been issued", inspector Tommy Broske told reporters.

Police have been investigating the case discreetly for several weeks but decided to make it public in the hope that someone would come forward with information, Broske said. We have not known anything comparable in this country. This has reportedly forced authorities to investigate the case in secret, supported by Interpol and the national police.

"As in all serious criminal cases, time is an important factor, and we rely on tips.to help us find the missing woman".

Police were scheduled to hold a press conference later Wednesday.

Kidnappings are rare in Norway, a Scandinavian nation of 5.3 million that prides itself on low crime rates.
