Kuchar extends lead at Sony Open

Kuchar is chasing his second win of the season

Fellow American Chez Reavie is outright third after picking up four shots while Keith Mitchell is a shot further back after gaining six shots. It's not often you're in full control.

Marc Leishman has surged to a tie for third place as American veteran Matt Kuchar extended his US PGA Tour career resurgence with a dominant victory at the Sony Open in Honolulu.

He found a bunker on the par-five 18th hole and looked as if he might finish with yet another bogey.

He gets another test Sunday, and Kuchar at least is equipped with recent experience.

Kuchar then won once in 2014 - the RBC Heritage - but came up empty until last fall when he won the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

South African native Rory Sabbatini played his first event under the Slovakian flag, and shot a second round 67 to move to five-under overall, nine shots adrift of Kuchar.

"Last year I probably ground harder than I've done in the past", he said.

Kuchar has been one of the steadiest golfers on the tour this season and said the key for him is keeping the ball in play and limiting his mistakes.

He closed with a 68 and moved into the top 50 for the first time in his career.

"It was pretty tough to walk but obviously things worked out pretty well", he said. Putnam missed an 8-foot birdie attempt on No. 18.

"Just two great days". There are a lot of good players out there. Along with his runner-up finish in the Sanderson Farms Championship last fall, he has almost as many FedEx Cup points as past year when he finished at No. 130.

DeChambeau's round of 7-under 63 jumped him up into a nine-way tie for fifth place (11 under). "He was battling me, took the lead and it was nice to have that pressure and come through, make some birdies coming in. I have to stay aggressive".

He at least made the cut, more than could be said for Jordan Spieth, who missed by a stroke despite a 66 for one-under. He shot 76. Also missing the 54-hole cut was Steve Stricker, who will stay in Hawaii an extra week for the opening event of the PGA Tour Champions season. He also beat Patrick Reed and Ian Poulter, who are both only 15 years younger than Love but also played in the Ryder Cup.

But Kuchar edged back in front when he pitched to three feet to set up a birdie at 10 before holing from 10 feet at the 12th, although Putnam then regained a share of the lead with a clutch 20-foot putt for birdie at the 13th.
