Labour’s Gardiner hints at referendum on Corbyn Brexit deal

UK May suffers defeat over vote on no-deal Brexit

A deal setting out the terms of the United Kingdom's divorce from the European Union has been agreed to between the prime minister and the European Union, but it must pass a vote in Britain's Parliament before it is formally adopted.

May said the vote in parliament would be around 15 January, as expected, contrary to reports she could delay it.

"She wants to get more legal and political assurances about things like the Northern Ireland backstop".

Confirming the vote on Theresa May's deal will be held next Tuesday, Kwasi Kwarteng said a 2021 time limit on the backstop for Northern Ireland was "being looked at".

"At that stage it makes sense to go to the country and say "Here we are, this is what we have managed to negotiate...we think it's a better way forward", he told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show. In December, May chose to postpone a parliamentary vote meant to ratify the agreement at the last minute after it became clear that it would be overwhelmingly defeated in the House of Commons.

Lawmakers are due to vote on whether to accept May's exit deal in the week beginning 14 January.

"There was no question, that I remember, on the referendum about a "deal" or not; it was "leave" or 'remain.' And the way you leave is to come out on the 29th of March".

Tonia Antoniazzi, Labour MP for Gower, said: "I feel particularly strongly that this stasis, this logjam that we are in is making the public extremely frustrated".

With fears of a no-deal Brexit growing more than 200 MPs have signed a letter to May urging her to take no-deal Brexit off the list of possible options.

Addressing opponents on both the Remain and Brexiteer wings of the Commons, she said: "There are some in Parliament who, despite voting in favour of holding the referendum, voting in favour of triggering Article 50 and standing on manifestos committed to delivering Brexit, now want to stop us leaving by holding another referendum".

"I would say don't let the search for the flawless become the enemy of the good because the danger there is that we end up with no Brexit at all".

She did not answer whether she would, if defeated, make a second attempt to get the deal passed by parliament.

One told Sky News that MPs' attitudes had recently "hardened" towards a belief leaving the European Union without a withdrawal agreement would be "absolutely okay".

He told Sky News that the Christmas recess will not have changed any minds, and if anything it will have "hardened attitudes of MPs to what is called a no-deal Brexit".

The survey of more than 25,000 people, commissioned by the People's Vote campaign, found that 75 per cent of Labour voters supported the idea of another referendum. The EU has shown in the past that it will move but only if faced with a resolute red line on the part of the UK Government.

Ms Thornberry said her party would be happy to "go back to the people" if it won power at a snap general election but failed to get its own Brexit plans through.

"And it seems to me, at a personal level. that is the time when we would then say to people, "Now make your decision on what we have managed to conclude".
