Foods including whole-grain pita bread, fresh fruit, salads, nuts, beans, olive oil, and salmon are staples of 2019's top diet and promote a variety of health benefits. You can have red wine in moderation if you'd like, but you must get plenty of exercise and enjoy meals with family and friends.

Weight Watchers - now called WW - was fourth.

Studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet can be effective in reducing the risk of diabetes, high cholesterol, memory loss, dementia, depression, and breast cancer. Eating a diet that's mostly vegetarian while also allowing for an occasional burger or steak to satisfy a craving can help with weight management and improve overall health, Blatner says.

"These diets that are consistently top performers are scoring well, from nutrition to helpfulness, ease, ability to help prevent chronic conditions and more", Haupt said.

But the diet topping any list isn't necessarily the best diet for you.
