On Friday, his lawyer Steve Greenberg gave an interview with the Associated Press in which he strongly denied the allegations levelled at his client.

Following the airing of the Lifetime documentary Surviving R Kelly, which details the allegations of abuse and statutory rape against Kelly, Chicago police have confirmed they spoke to the Ignition singer after the Cook County State's Attorney's office received a tip that two women were being held against their will at the star's residence in Trump Tower.

"Those who are all appalled and up in arms should respect the fact that police have been there and they've verified that that there's absolutely nothing wrong", Greenberg said.

The family's response? "If you want to show that this is a consensual relationship, allow Joycelyn to see her parents", they said, according to The Blast.

The scrutiny also extends to Georgia, where an Atlanta-area couple said Georgia prosecutors have reached out to them after they repeatedly said that Kelly brainwashed their daughter and kept her from contacting them.

Surviving R Kelly documented the stories of survivors who say they experienced sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of Kelly since 1998.

Kelly, whose given name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was acquitted in 2008 on charges of videotaping himself having sex with a girl who prosecutors allege was as young as 13.

"We know what happened, and we know those things didn't happen", lawyer, Steven Greenberg, said.

When asked about Kelly's rumored legal action plans, Greenberg said "hopefully he'll sue Lifetime" for defamation.

At the same time, Greenberg said he didn't think Kelly's career would be hurt by the allegations. "The man was not operating a harem, or a sex cult, or holding people hostage or anything like that". "Except that my understanding is that she did not claim to be 15 and, in order to get married, she had to lie about her age".
