Recall expanded for blood pressure meds containing cancer-causing chemical

Company expands recall for potassium tablets

Company expands recall for potassium tablets

The announcement comes a month after Mylan NV said it will recall all lots of its blood pressure medicines containing valsartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker, after global health authorities clamped down on the drug. Losartan potassium is a drug used to control high blood pressure.

They contain trace amounts of N-nitrosodiethylamine, a substance that can be encountered in air pollution, industrial activity, drinking water and select foods.

The contaminants first showed up in drugs that contained valsartan, but subsequent tests have found them in others made by a Chinese company, Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical Co.

Reportedly, the U.S. FDA (Food & Drug Administration) claimed that the impurity, scientifically known as NDEA (N-Nitrosodiethylamine), was found in unconventional amounts in certain tablets including Valsartan HCTZ tablets USP, Amlodipine Valsartan tablets USP, and Valsartan tablets USP, which resulted in the voluntary recall of the medicine.

The medication is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure.

"I recommend if the patients have any questions at all, whether they think they are affected or not, the pharmacist is a very accessible resource for them and they should call their local pharmacist if they have any concerns about their medication", says Dr. Ganio.

"At present, there is no evidence that medicines containing NDMA or NDEA have caused any harm to patients".

To date, Torrent Pharmaceuticals Limited has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall. It is also used to treat kidney disease in patients with diabetes. To keep up with news on which products are being recalled, consumers are advised to monitor the FDA website. You can check out the full list of products along with their lot numbers on the FDA's recall page. This is an increase from the two lots recalled in December.

Losartan potassium tablets, USP were distributed nationwide to Torrent's wholesale distributor, repackager and retail customers.
