The North West education department has suspended a teacher while an investigation is conducted.

The school apologised and de-segregated classes.

According to the mother, she dropped of her child at school and around 9am, the teacher posted a photo of the grade R classroom on WhatsApp to give the parents an update on their kids.

A black parent told the TimesLive news site that she thought her child's first day at school in had got off to a good start until she saw the image.

The parent said: "This was meant to be an exciting day for me but it's not".

The picture sparked outrage on social media in many quarters.

A mother of one of the four, who was angered by the incident, said the photo was sent to the school's WhatsApp group. "I can't help but think what kind of people can subject such hate to a mere 19month-year-old child", the mother wrote on Facebook.

In 2015, a year before the incident that took place in Pretoria, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) found Curro Roodeplaat School guilty of racism after a video surfaced online of children being separated based on the colour of their skin.

The GDE, led by Lesufi, concluded that what they had witnessed on the video, showing white children being separated from their black classmates as they hopped off the bus, was a common occurrence in classrooms.

"All I saw was messages from the white parents saying "dankie, dankie" (thank you, thank you') on the WhatsApp group but no one was saying anything about the separation of the learners", said the mother who was not named to protect the identity of the child.

The school hasn't responded to requests for comment. We can not allow the future of the children to be a risk because of a racist agenda.
