Trump again calls for complete wall at border

But while fencing has been expanded and replaced, no work has been begun on a border wall.

The second false point in Trump's Twitter post Wednesday is his statement that "much of the Wall has already been fully renovated or built". This is also not true.

"We do have a crisis on the border right now".

"I don't think any particular progress was made today, but we talked all aspects of it and it was a civil discussion", McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said on the Senate floor after the meeting. "Hopefully we can get there Friday", McCarthy said, referring to congressional leaders and White House officials having a conversation about merely pursuing "common ground" on ending the partial government shutdown. "It is not helping the president, it is not helping the Republicans to be the owner of this shutdown".

At the Capitol on Wednesday, Pelosi said she hoped Republicans and the White House "are hearing what we have offered" to end the shutdown.

The growing impacts of the shutdown could create pressure on all sides to reach a resolution.

House Democrats will put a bill on the floor Thursday allocating $1.3 billion in additional funding for border security rather than $5 billion President Donald Trump wants, as they don't want to "pay a $5 billion ransom note for a medieval border wall", House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries said Wednesday.

"It's not often the president gets to hear people tell him when he's wrong".

"I think I would have been a good general, but who knows?" he said. The meeting is taking place one day before Democrats retake control of the House at noon on Thursday, heralding a massive power shift in Washington after two years of unified Republican control.

According to White House officials, Democrats were not open to listening to Nielsen's briefing about the situation at the southern border, resulting in an unproductive meeting.

Her immediate task: finding a way to help end a stand-off over Trump's border wall demand that has led to a partial government shutdown now stretching nearly two weeks. She previously canceled her Christmas plans at Mar-a-Lago to return to the White House, where she and the president made a surprise overnight trip to visit troops in Iraq the day after Christmas.

Eventually Schumer asked a third time for one reason Trump wouldn't accept the offer, and Trump responded: "I would look foolish if I did that."

Trump invited Congressional leaders back to the White House on Friday amid a partial shutdown of the federal government that is now eleven days old.

"Government shutdowns should be as off-limits to budget negotiations as chemical weapons are to warfare", Alexander wrote.

The gathering Wednesday afternoon should be different, at least publicly. After a White House meeting on Sunday, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Trump was receptive to Graham's idea of a deal that might provide work permits to Dreamer immigrants in exchange for money for physical border barriers.

And the Trump administration has issued guidance limiting other pain, including allowing agencies to use left-over money to keep running as long as they can.

He also parried complaints from Democrats who've called the wall immoral by remarking, "Then we have to do something about the Vatican, because the Vatican has the biggest wall of them all".

In her reprised role, she will have to thread a political needle, standing up to Trump when needed but also showing that her party is capable of working with the president to pass legislation. Trump had said Mexico would pay for the wall but Mexico has refused. Since becoming president, though, he has shifted this promise, saying the money must come from USA taxpayers. That measure would provide money through the remainder of the fiscal year, to September 30.

Homeland Security, meanwhile, would get a one-month infusion of cash, lasting through February 8, at the same rate of spending as 2018.

Some 800,000 federal workers are impacted, including around 350,000 who have been furloughed while the rest stay on the job wondering whether they will end up getting paid.
