WSJ reveals 2019 iPhone lineup details

Apple will release three new iPhone models in 2019, including a XR successor and a triple-camera flagship, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal. Huawei's Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro, launched previous year, carry three rear cameras. That's sure to be the iPhone 11 Max, or whatever Apple's biggest 2019 phone launches as.

While planning for 2019 models "has progressed to a point where major features can not be changed easily", it's not completed, according to people familiar with the matter.

The report doesn't specify if both the regular and larger iPhone 11 (that's a non-final name) will have triple cameras or if that setup will be reserved for the iPhone 11 Max. The iPhone XR, which is believed to have been the least popular of the three, will be updated with a model that comes with the same LCD display and similar design, according to the report.

Looking ahead to 2020, Apple apparently might ditch LCD altogether.

We haven't seen a treble-camera phone from Apple yet either, so the upcoming model will be its first. It isn't clear whether Apple is planning to introduce any major features for the iPhone XR successor, or whether it will just be all about spec upgrades.

Apple does not report individual unit sales for iPhones and iPads in its quarterly earnings reports, so we won't know exactly how many iPhone XRs have sold since its release in October 2018. This means the company's complete 2019 lineup would likely make use of the iPhone XR's Haptic Touch feature instead. Meanwhile, Apple chose to troll competitors by placing user security and privacy-related ads around CES venues, and TV makers including Samsung announced that AirPlay 2 support would be available inside new TVs. While the XR's successor is said to retain the LCD display of the 2018 model, the 2019 XR will reportedly get the dual-lens camera system that is now only found on the iPhone XS series.
